My paintings are a reflection of internal conversations I have with myself. Whether existential or light-hearted, I express my personal and cultural experiences through my work — a reaction to my shifting environment through the lens of my unique perspective as an artist.
Born in Seoul, I was exposed to the beauty of eastern calligraphy early on. I have always been inspired by the bold yet delicate brush strokes; I love how brushwork evokes a purely emotional response in the viewer by giving the painting a beautiful aesthetic quality as well as a sense of balance and meaning. To me, the lines speak volumes. In my past works, I have explored and incorporated my love of calligraphy in abstract paintings that are sometimes based on a word, and are at other times entirely abstract. My current works explore more on nature themes with vibrant colors still incorporating elements of gestural lines and brush strokes.
I studied at Cal Arts as an Art major before attending UCLA as a Design major. After graduating and working for a few years in a design firm, I took a long hiatus from work and painting to raise my two beautiful girls. When I became an empty nester after they left for college, I picked up my brush again. Now, I live and work near Laguna Beach, California from my home studio with our family dog, Lucy (pictured) who waits patiently for her daily walks while I work. My inspiration comes from what surrounds me: the ocean and nature, listening to my favorite classical music, and people and places I visit.
